Bar Doctors has been the idea of two friends and business associates for about the last five years or so. John Stanton and Bill Morrin Esq. John met Bill about seven years ago when he bought a nightclub called John’s Bar & Grill, which was eventually turned into Whiskey Tango. At the time Bill worked with Ed Taraskus specializing in liquor law. They were well known and respected as being one of Philadelphia’s top attorneys in their field.
In the beginning John had worked for years in the bar business but this was the first time owning one so truthfully John bugged the shit out of Bill trying to understand the mess he had gotten himself into…LOL. Through the years they became friends. John worked hard and became very active in the bar industry making many friends with people in all aspects of the bar business. John was obsessed with learning the law and was active in trying to change the laws that affect us and on the forefront of fighting upcoming legislation that could be harmful to the industry. He joined the Philadelphia Tavern Association and was elected to the board as secretary and then eventually president. He helped the tavern association fight against the smoking ban and the point system that was enforced a few years ago. John attended many political functions and positioned himself well as a responsible owner of one of the biggest (14,000sq ft.) nightclubs in the city. John took initiative like training his security staff, RAMP training for the entire staff, fire evacuation training by the P.F.D., and a full employee handbook for his staff. All of this even impressed the District Attorney’s Office (Nuisance Task Force Division) and John assisted the DA, PPD, PFD, LCB, LCE, Philadelphia Nuisance Task Force, and other law enforcement agencies in consulting with other bar owners to show them how to operate a safer and more productive business.
Over the next few years John operated the business and would have to deal with many obstacles both legal and internal gaining experience and knowledge along the way. John even tried to get his own reality tv show. You can see the pitch tape here
During this same period Bill worked with Ed as they had been for over 20 years handling legal work for hundreds and hundreds of licensees, until sometime in 2005. Bill decided to go it alone and left Ed’s firm to start his own firm. Since then Bill has been building his client list and enjoying the freedoms that come with owning your own business. Bill has an excellent history in both liquor work and litigation. Because of his experience in hundreds of liquor license transfers Bill can process your deal quickly and easily, always keeping your best interest in mind. The result is a fast, clean, and safe transaction for all parties involved.
Anyway, sometime in 2004 John and Bill talked about starting a business called “The P.L.A.N.”, which stood for, Pennsylvania Liability Avoidance Network. The idea was to have a referral network of support and a legal advice newsletter that would help bar owners navigate the frustrating world we live in. For this members would pay a fee to belong to our service. Hmmm, sounds just like the referral service and newsletter we offer now, only now IT’S FREE! We decided to offer that service for free to the industry to help people in this business find the help they need easily and hopefully they will refer us to others that can use our services or call us when it’s time to sell their business or buy another one. Besides, it makes for good karma! We always toyed with the idea of getting started but our busy lives slowed down the process.
Around the middle of 2008 over a few Jack Daniels one or the other came up with the name “Bar Doctors”…and then the other said “the cure for your ailing bar”….at least we think it happened that way. Anyway a few months later John sold his business and suddenly had the time and energy to invest in this project, which brings us to where we are today. Bar Doctors is a fully licensed and insured firm that can handle all of your bar industry needs. As brokers our fee is only 6%, which is most cases, is half of what other agencies charge and we can offer many more services for that fee.
We can even handle all of your real estate needs as well, no need to get a separate broker to sell your building. We pride ourselves at being upfront and honest businessmen, we mean what we say and say what we mean. A person is only as good as their word and we take our word very seriously. We promise to always be diligent and honest in all of our business dealings. Both Bill and John have built their reputations on years and years of good business decisions and relationships.
Please, check out our referrals and ask them. We look forward to meeting all of your needs, don’t hesitate to call…
